Naozumi Arima

Japanese:
Naozumi Arima
Year of death: April 25, 1641 (June 3, 1641)
Year of birth: Tensho 14 (1586)
A feudal lord in the early Edo period. His father was the Christian feudal lord Arima Harunobu, and his mother was the daughter of Yamada Hyobu Suminori. He was born in Arima, Hizen Province (Nagasaki Prefecture). His childhood name was Daikichi, he was commonly known as Saemonnosuke, and his baptismal name was Miguel. In the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 (Keicho 5), he accompanied Kato Kiyomasa and attacked Konishi Yukinaga's Uto Castle. He served Tokugawa Ieyasu, and in 1612 he divorced his wife Marta (Konishi Yukinaga's niece) and remarried Ieyasu's adopted daughter Kunihime (whose real father was Honda Tadamasa), and also abandoned Christianity. In 1613, after his father Harunobu was exiled to Kaishu due to the Okamoto Daihachi incident, he inherited the Arima territory. It is said that Naozumi was estranged from his father, which was actually a blessing in disguise for the survival of the Arima family. In the same year, his fief was increased to 53,000 koku in the Hyuga Province (later Nobeoka) domain, but many of his retainers remained in Arima because of his policy of cracking down on Christians. In 1637 (Kan'ei 14), he marched to his former domain of Arima during the Shimabara Rebellion, and ironically fought against his former retainers in Hara Castle. <References> "Arima Harunobu-ki" ("Zoku Gunsho Ruiju" vol. 23, Vol. 1), "Nihon Kirishitan Sect History" by L.
