…In the villages of the Osumi Peninsula, a ritual called the Shiba Matsuri was held in the New Year to mark the start of the hunting season. The ritual was performed by inserting tsubaki into the four corners, and the beginning and end of the ritual were indicated by using the words Shiba Ake and Shiba Fuse. A Shibagaki is a fence made by bundling tsubaki with green leaves, which represents a sacred and inviolable world of peace protected by the spirits of the green leaves, and in some places the forest around the residence is called a 'Kashi no Koshiba' (little oak tree).
