〘Noun〙① The direction of the mountains. The direction close to the mountains. Please go away, everyone." ② In Edo or Tokyo, a residential area on a slightly elevated area. In the Edo period, this referred to areas such as Kojimachi, Yotsuya, Ushigome, Akasaka, Koishikawa, and Hongo, and was mostly occupied by samurai residences of feudal lords and hatamoto (direct vassals) and temples, with town houses being rare. Since the Meiji period, it has become an area where many government officials and military personnel from the provinces live. Currently, it broadly includes Setagaya and Suginami wards. Yamate [Yamate]

Yamanote. ⇔Seaside. ※Joruri, Urashima Chronicle (1722), vol. 1 "The Hayato are the mountainside, the Hirama are the seaside, they yell "hurry, hurry!" and chase them away. ② In the Middle Ages, shugo and feudal lords set up checkpoints in the mountains and on land routes and collected taxes from travellers. Customs duties. Checkpoint. ※Added since Kenmu in the Naikaku Bunko edition - March 9, 1347 (3rd year of the Sadawa era) "Composed of one new checkpoint, one port fee, collected from one Yamate and Kawate, and made into one trouble for travelers." ③ Abbreviation of "Yamatemai (Yamate rice)." ※Daijo-in Temple and Shrine Miscellaneous Records - December 19, 1493 (Meiō 2) “East Odawara (Zuigan-ji Temple) has 8 tan of rice fields under repair, and among the scholars, they have been given land in the mountains, and every year they receive 5 kan of rice in the mountains.” ④ ⇒ Yamanote (mountain)

〘名〙① 山の方。山に近い方。山をひかえた地域。※平家(13C前)九「九郎義経こそ三草の手を責おとひて、すでにみだれ入候なれ。山の手は大事に候。おのおのむかはれ候へ」② 江戸あるいは東京で、やや高台にある住宅地。江戸時代には麹町、四谷、牛込、赤坂、小石川、本郷などをいい、殆ど大名、旗本などの武家屋敷と寺院で占められ、町家は稀だった。明治以降、官吏や地方出身の軍人などが多く居住する地域となる。現在は広く世田谷・杉並区を含める。下町に対していう。※仮名草子・可笑記(1642)一「浅草芝口神田山(ヤマ)の手(テ)、其の外の寺々野山ごとに」

やま‐て【山手】

〘名〙① 山のある地帯。山に近い所。山よりの土地。山の手。⇔海手。※浄瑠璃・浦島年代記(1722)一「隼人は山手、平馬は海手、急げ急げと追立やり」② 中世、守護・領主などが山中・陸路に関所を設けて通行人から徴収した税。関銭。関手。※内閣文庫本建武以来追加‐貞和三年(1347)三月九日「構新関、号津料、取山手河手、成旅人煩事」③ 「やまてまい(山手米)」の略。※大乗院寺社雑事記‐明応二年(1493)一二月一九日「東小田原〈随願寺〉、修理田八反在之、学衆之内此間押知行之、山在之、毎年五貫計山手也」④ ⇒やまのて(山手)
