A stage that is framed by a proscenium arch and extends beyond it, like a picture frame. This style is used in most theaters today and emerged in the 17th century. It absorbed the arena stage (a circular stage space) surrounded by a circular or semicircular audience seating, and the Elizabethan apron stage, which had a square front stage that extended into the audience seating, and a large proscenium arch clearly separates the audience seating from the stage. The appearance of the frame stage was a major advancement in stage equipment, as it became possible to prepare the equipment simply by closing the curtains attached to the arch, but it also weakened the sense of intimacy between the audience and the stage.
