Hokuetsu War

Japanese: 北越戦争 - ほくえつせんそう
Hokuetsu War
This was one of the Boshin Wars, and took place in central and northern Echigo from leap April to August 1868 (Keio 4). It was a battle between the new government forces (the Hokuriku-do pacification army, with Kuroda Kiyotaka and Yamagata Aritomo as staff officers) and the Oshu-Uetsu Reppan Alliance forces. The alliance forces controlled the key Niigata Port and supplied themselves with weapons, and under the command of Kawai Tsugunosuke, they waged a defensive battle centered on Nagaoka. The new government forces were forced into the most difficult battle of the Boshin War, but at the end of July they captured Nagaoka Castle again, taking control of Echigo and opening a new phase for the Aizu War.
