He compiled the Emperor's dictation and his diary, which he had begun on the ship to St. Helena and continued on the island, and published his own Memoirs in 1818. He then published eight volumes of the Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène (1823), with a preface dated 1822. This work is said to be the Gospel of the Napoleonic legend, and is a masterpiece of St. Helenian literature.
