Memorial de Sainte-Helène (English)

…In December 1816, he was exiled by Governor Hudson Lowe of St. Helena on suspicion of conspiracy, and lived in Brussels. After the death of Napoleon in 1821, he returned to France. He compiled the Emperor's dictation and his diary, which he had begun on the ship to St. Helena and continued on the island, and published his own Memoirs in 1818. He then published eight volumes of the Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène (1823), with a preface dated 1822. This work is said to be the Gospel of the Napoleonic legend, and is a masterpiece of St. Helenian literature. It clearly conveys Napoleon's identification of the Empire with the Revolution, the legitimacy of the transition from the Revolution to the Empire, and his liberal intentions, and achieved Napoleon's political goal of transforming from a dictator to a savior. …
