…From the beginning of the 6th century, they received pensions from the Byzantine Empire and were responsible for defending the borders against the incursions of nomads. The heyday of the empire was under the rule of al-Ḥārith b. Jabala (Greek name Aretas, r. 529-569), who served in two of Justinian II's Persian campaigns, and in 554 defeated the Lakhmids near Kinnasurin, for which he was awarded the titles of patrician and philarch. He protected the Monophysite Jacob Baradaeus and helped establish the Jacobite Church in Syria. …
