A bird of the family Columbiformes (illustration). Total length is about 33 cm. It is light brown with a burgundy hue overall, with reddish brown scales on the upper surface. The wings are dark brown. It is characterized by dark blue and white stripes on both sides of its neck. Its beak is blackish, and its legs are dark red. It is widely distributed in Asia east of the Urals and Pamirs. In Japan, it is found from Hokkaido to the Sakishima Islands of Okinawa, and along with the brown-eared bulbul, it is one of the most widely distributed birds in Japan. Those in northern Japan migrate south in winter.

ハト目ハト科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約33cm。全体にぶどう色を帯びた薄い褐色をしていて，上面には赤みのある褐色のうろこ模様がある。翼は暗褐色。首の両側に濃い青色と白色の縞模様があるのが特徴。くちばしは黒っぽく，脚は暗赤色。ウラルおよびパミール以東のアジア大陸に広く分布している。日本では北海道から沖縄の先島諸島まで分布しており，ヒヨドリとともに日本でもっとも分布の広い鳥の一つ。北日本のものは冬季は南へ移動する。
