Japanese: 松代[町] - まつだい

A former town in Higashikubiki County, southern Niigata Prefecture. Located in the Higashikubiki Hills. Produces rice, burdock, and fern, and is famous for producing dried buckwheat. Many people migrate to the Kanto region to work. National Route 253 runs through the town, and the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line opened in March 1997. It is one of the snowiest areas in the prefecture. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Tokamachi City along with Kawanishi Town, Nakazato Village, and Matsunoyama Town in Nakauonuma County. Area: 90.47 ^km2 . Population: 4,245 (2003).

新潟県南部，東頸城(ひがしくびき)郡の旧町。東頸城丘陵にある。米，ウド，ゼンマイを産し，乾ソバの生産が有名。関東地方への出稼(でかせぎ)が多い。国道253号線が通じ，1997年３月には北越急行ほくほく線開業。県下の最深雪地の一つ。2005年４月中魚沼郡川西町，中里村，東頸城郡松之山町と十日町市へ編入。90.47km²。4245人（2003）。
