Ikuhomon-in

Japanese: 郁芳門院 - いくほうもんいん
Ikuhomon-in

The first princess of Emperor Shirakawa. Her given name was Teishi. Her mother was Kenshi, the daughter of Minamoto Akifusa and adopted by Fujiwara Morozane. She was also called Rokujo-in after her place of residence. In 1078 (Shoryaku 2), she was appointed as Saigū at Ise, but retired in 1084 (Otoku 1) after her mother's death. In 1091 (Kanji 5), she became the second consort of Emperor Horikawa as the quasi-mother, setting an example of a woman becoming an empress without being the wife of the emperor. In 1093 (Kanji 7), she was given the title of Senge and called Ikuhomon-in. He was so beloved by his father, the retired Emperor Shirakawa, that it was said that "the supreme power of the world belongs to this man alone." The day after his father's death, the retired Emperor became a monk. He was buried at Daigo Enkoin Temple, and his grave is called Kamino Daigo no Misasagi.
