...The dolls used in the Hinamatsuri festival are said to be descended from the dolls (hitogata, katashiro), which are used as talismanic objects to cleanse the body of the dolls and then floated away, and the Nagashibina dolls that remain in various places today are thought to be an event that conveys such ancient spirit. In Tottori Prefecture, most Nagashibina dolls are displayed on a doll stand, and one pair is offered to the Shinto altar, and the other is placed on a straw sack and floated away in the evening. In Shiraiwa, Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture, a custom called "kanambare" is practiced, in which children cook food on the riverbank, offer it to the dolls, and after everyone has eaten it, the old dolls are placed on a straw sack and floated away. Also, although they are not released into the river, in Oyata, Ogasa County, Shizuoka Prefecture, it is said that after going to Hinayama near the shrine to eat and play, people show the old dolls that they no longer need the sea before placing them there, and in Tano County, Gunma Prefecture, there are places where if someone falls ill after the Doll's Festival, the dolls are sent off to a shrine or mulberry field to be discarded, with the hope that they will take the place of the sick person.

…雛祭の人形は，それで身をなでて穢れをはらったあと流し去る人形（ひとがた）(形代（かたしろ）)という呪具の系統をひくものとされるが，現在の各地に残る流し雛はそのような古い心意を伝える行事と思われる。鳥取県の流し雛の多くは，雛壇に飾った2組の雛のうち1組を神棚に供え，残りを夕方に桟俵（さんだわら）にのせて流すものであり，長野県南佐久郡白岩では〈カナンバレ〉といって，子どもが河原で煮炊きして雛にも供え皆でも食べたあと，古雛を桟俵にのせて流し去る。また川に流すのではないが，静岡県小笠郡小谷田では，神社の近くの〈ヒナヤマ〉へ行って食事をして遊んだあと，不用の古雛に海を見せてからそこに納めるといい，群馬県多野郡には，雛祭後に病人が出ると雛に身代りになってもらおうとして，病気を捨てるために神社や桑畑に送り出す所がある。…
