Bonotsu [town] - Bonotsu
An old town in Kawanabe County, on the southwestern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. Bonotsu Port is one of the three major ports in the country, and has long flourished as a port of departure and arrival for envoys sent to the Tang Dynasty, and was a base for smuggling during the period of national isolation. Coastal fishing is carried out using line and fixed net fishing, and sea bream is farmed. Ponkan oranges and persimmons are also produced here. Take a bus from Makurazaki City. In November 2005, Minamisatsuma was incorporated as a city by merging with Kaseda City, Kasasa Town in Kawabe County, Oura Town, and Kinpo Town in Hioki County. 38.61 km2 . 4,646 people (2003).
