Irish lawyer and politician. Born to John MacBride, who participated in the 1916 Easter Rising and was executed by the British Army, and Maud Gonn MacBride, a women's leader in the independence movement, he played an active role as an IRA leader from an early age. After the establishment of the Constitution in 1937, he became critical of the IRA's activities, and in 1939, he broke off his ties with the IRA in protest against the bombing campaign against Britain. He later became famous as a lawyer, defending republicans in court, but in 1946 he founded the People's Party, became a member of Parliament, and in 1948 formed the first coalition government with the Fine Gael Party, becoming Foreign Minister (1948-51).

アイルランドの法律家，政治家。1916年のイースター蜂起に参加してイギリス軍に処刑されたジョン･マックブライドと独立運動の女性指導者モード･ゴン･マックブライドの子として生まれ，早くからIRAの幹部として活躍した。37年の憲法制定以後IRAの活動に批判的になり，39年にはイギリスに対する爆弾闘争に抗議してIRAと絶縁した。その後，弁護士として法廷で共和主義者の弁護にあたり名声を博するが，46年には人民党を組織し，国会議員になり，48年に統一アイルランド党(フィネ･ゲール)と第1次連立内閣を組閣して外相(1948‐51)に就任した。
