Located in the eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture, on the west coast of the base of the Izu Peninsula, facing Suruga Bay. Established as a city in 1923. The central town at the mouth of the Kano River was a post town on the Tokaido, and developed as a castle town after Hojo Soun built the castle. The Tokaido Main Line, Gotemba Line, and Tomei Expressway pass through the city. Industry developed during World War II, especially in electrical equipment, general machinery, and metal manufacturing, and it is one of the centers of the Suruga Bay coastal industrial area. It is also a base for coastal and deep-sea fishing, and is number one in Japan for dried horse mackerel production. The surrounding areas produce a lot of vegetables. It is the base for Izu and Hakone tourism, with a sea route to the west coast of the Izu Peninsula, and there are many scenic spots such as Osezaki and Senbonmatsubara. In April 2005, Toda Village in Tagata District was incorporated. Area: 186.96 km2 . 静岡県東部,伊豆半島の基部西岸にあり,駿河湾に面する市。1923年市制。狩野(かの)川河口部の中心市街は東海道の宿場町で,北条早雲の築城後は城下町としても発達。東海道本線,御殿場線,東名高速道路が通じる。第2次大戦中から工業が発達,特に電気機器,一般機器,金属工業が盛んで,駿河湾臨海工業地域の一中心をなす。沿岸漁業や遠洋漁業の根拠地でもあり,アジの干物生産では全国1位を占める。周辺部では野菜を多産。伊豆・箱根観光の基地で伊豆半島西海岸へ航路が通じ,大瀬崎,千本松原など景勝地が多い。2005年4月田方郡戸田村を編入。186.96km2。20万2304人(2010)。→沼津藩
