Hexi Four Counties (English spelling)

Japanese: 河西四郡 - かせいしぐん（英語表記）Hé xī sì jùn

Hexi is a long, narrow region that runs west from the Yellow River in Gansu Province, China, along the north side of the Qilian Mountains. Commonly known as the Hexi Corridor, it is dotted with oases in the desert and forms the eastern end of the Silk Road. Emperor Wu of Han defeated the Xiongnu who occupied this area, securing an east-west trade route. In the 1st century BCE, the four prefectures of Jiuquan, Zhangye, Dunhuang, and Wuwei were established there, one after the other. The oasis cities that form the centers of these four prefectures are still alive and well today. [Hibino Tsuyoshi]
