It is a form of martial arts called iaido that has been turned into a spectacle. During times of peace, when martial arts in general were turned into spectacle, iaido, in which a long sword is unsheathed with a strong will, became particularly popular, and was started by ronin around the Kanbun era (1661-1673). This was noticed by the Matsui family, who were incense sellers of anti-soul repellent from Ecchu (Toyama), and it was during the Genroku and Hoei eras (1688-1711) that they began to perform iaido to gather medicine sellers. The successive generations of Matsui Genzaemon and Matsui Gensui from the Kyoho era (1716-1736) were famous, and Gensui later performed the curved top. With the source of the water in Okuyama, Asakusa, Edo, Nagai Hyosuke, who was based in Kuramae, also demonstrated his sword skills to crowds selling toothpaste, and his name was passed down for five generations until the Meiji period.
