...Population: 266,988 (1995). Founded in 1540 on the island of Cascajar in the bay of the same name. During the colonial period, the city did not develop due to the high temperature and rainfall and malaria, but in the second half of the 19th century, banana plantations were established nearby and the city began to show some activity.
