Prohibition Party

Japanese: 禁酒党 - きんしゅとう
Prohibition Party

… [Masatoshi Miichi]
[America]
In the New England region of the United States, where the tradition of Puritanism was strong, alcoholic beverages were strongly criticized from an early stage as damaging to social customs, but the temperance movement gained momentum, with the founding of a temperance society in Boston in 1826 and the first prohibition law being enacted in Maine in 1846. This spread to other parts of the North and to the West, and by 1856 prohibition laws had been enacted in 13 states. In 1869, a temperance convention was held in Chicago with the participation of representatives from 20 states, and the Prohibition Party was formed, which went on to nominate a presidential candidate in the 1872 election. Women also actively participated in these activities, and the temperance movement sought solidarity with the women's suffrage movement and various other reform movements.
