Japanese: 代父母 - だいふぼ（英語表記）godparents

In the Catholic Church, godparents are believers who guide the life of faith of adult candidates for baptism in place of their parents when they are converted to Christianity. Since the 3rd century, godparents have been present at the baptismal catechumenate, the liturgy for the baptismal candidate, and the baptism and confirmation ceremonies, and perform other roles, such as witnessing. Later, godparents also performed the same duties in place of the believer's parents in the case of infant baptism. Nowadays, godparents are present at infant baptisms and lay on their right hands, but baptism is performed when the believer's parents testify and make a profession of faith (Catholic Ritual Book "Baptism of Infants" 1975, "Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults" 1976).
