Matsuo Style

Japanese:
Matsuo Style

It is a school of tea ceremony. Its distant ancestor was Tsuji Gensai, a disciple of Takeno Jōō, and its founder was Himago Souji (1677-1752), the great-grandson of Matsuo Souji (1579-1658), a disciple of Sen Sōtan who was sometimes counted as one of the Four Heavenly Kings. However, some refer to Tsuji Gensai as the first and Souji as the sixth. The first Souji was born in Kyoto and first studied the Sotan school of tea under Machida Shūha, but later received the full teachings from Kakujōsai Soza, the sixth head of the Omotesenke school, and traveled to the Nagoya area to spread the tea ceremony. He wrote the Heisouki. The second head priest, Sogo (1701-1871), was known as Gankosai and wrote the book Ganko Zuihitsu. The fifth head priest, Sogo (1792-1830), loved tea houses and landscaping, and left behind many paintings and calligraphy, and is considered to have revived the Matsuo school. The 13th head priest (Soten) is currently succeeding him at Rakushikiken in Higashi Ward, Nagoya.
