A village in Seta County, central Gunma Prefecture. Population 10,028 (1995). Occupying the southwest foot of Mount Akagi, facing Shibukawa City across the Tone River. Dendritic rice paddies have developed in the radial valleys at the foot of Mount Akagi, and fields and mulberry farms have been developed on the plateau at the foot of the mountain. Silkworm farming was traditionally the main industry, but after the completion of the Gunma Irrigation System in 1970, the cultivation of spinach and other vegetables has increased. Poultry farming and shiitake mushroom cultivation are also practiced. A nationally-known producer of willows, the trees that are forcibly grown for New Year's are shipped to the Keihin Market. There are many commuters to Maebashi City, Shibukawa City, and other cities.

群馬県中央部,勢多郡の村。人口1万0028(1995)。赤城山南西麓を占め,利根川をはさんで渋川市に対する。赤城山麓の放射谷には樹枝状の水田が発達し,山麓台地上は畑,桑園が開かれた。従来,養蚕が盛んだったが,1970年の群馬用水の完成後は,ホウレンソウなどの野菜栽培がふえた。養鶏やシイタケ栽培も行われる。ユキヤナギの全国的産地で,正月用に促成栽培されたユキヤナギは京浜市場に出荷されている。前橋市,渋川市などへの通勤者が多い。
