Takemoto Yamatojo

Japanese:
Takemoto Yamatojo
Year of death: 8th November 1766 (9th December 1766)
Year of birth: 1702 (Genroku 15)
A Gidayu-bushi tayuu in the mid-Edo period. Son of Takumi Ridayu, a senior disciple of Takemoto Chikugonojo. A pupil of Toyotake Echizen Shojo (the first Wakadayu). In 1723 (Kyoho 8), he began performing at the Toyotake Theater under the name Toyotake Miwadayu, and in 1724 (Kyoho 8), he moved to the Takemoto Theater under the name Takemoto Takumidayu, and in 1741 (Kanpo 1), he returned to the Toyotake Theater and became Toyotake Takumidayu. In 1745 (Enkyo 2), when his teacher Echizen Shojo, who was a central figure at the Toyotake Theater, retired, he received the name Toyotake Ueno Shojo and became a sandanme kirigatari, but retired in 1750. He went to Kyoto and took the name Takemo Miyako Osumi, but the following year, due to the so-called "Chushingura Incident," when this tayu moved from the Takemoto Theater to the Toyotake Theater, he returned to the Takemoto Theater as a monka-kaku successor and took the name Takemoto Osumi no Jyo. In 1751, he received the title of Takemoto Yamato no Jō Fujiwara Munenori. He was a central figure in the Takemoto-za theater during the Horeki period (mid-18th century), but due to issues with his style of performance, he rarely performed the realistic and dramatic third act, which was usually performed by tayu with crests, and instead mainly performed the musical and splendid fourth act and keigi. He also often performed at the Takemoto-za theater in Kyoto under the name Takemoto Yamato. In 1764, he retired and took the name Yurinken. Although he lacked volume, his voice was beautiful, and his pleasant-to-the-ear melodies, which made extensive use of rhythmic grooves that followed the beats, are still passed down today as "Yamato-style."
