A village in Sado County, Niigata Prefecture, located in the eastern part of Sado Island. Population 4,778 (1995). The western part is the grain-producing region of the Kuninaka Plain, while the eastern part is a purely agricultural village in the Kosado Hills. It was known as a habitat for the Japanese crested ibis (Tokuten), but by 1982 all wild ibises had been taken into custody at the Toki Conservation Center in the village. The village is home to the Homma family, head of the Sado Hosho school of Noh, and each shrine in the village has a Noh stage. Ondeko is a lion dance performed to the sound of majestic drums, incorporating elements of the Hosho school of Noh dance. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
