1114‐1200 Founder of the medieval Serbian Nemanjić dynasty (1168-1371). Reigned 1168-96. Initially, as Župan (chief), he ruled the Byzantine-controlled Ibla River basin. He then took advantage of the conflict between Byzantium and Venice to capture the important seaport of Kotor, and in 1183, he joined forces with the Hungarians to further expand his territory. He asked Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, who was passing through the Balkans during the Third Crusade, to join forces with Byzantium, but was rejected.
