Founder of the medieval Serbian Nemanjić dynasty (1168-1371). Reigned 1168-96. Initially, as Župan (chief), he ruled the Byzantine-controlled Ibla River basin. He then took advantage of the conflict between Byzantium and Venice to capture the important seaport of Kotor, and in 1183, he joined forces with the Hungarians to further expand his territory. He asked Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, who was passing through the Balkans during the Third Crusade, to join forces with Byzantium, but was rejected.

セルビアの中世のネマニッチ王朝(1168‐1371)の始祖。在位1168‐96年。初めジュパン(族長)としてビザンティン支配下のイブラ川流域を治めていた。その後ビザンティンとベネチアの抗争を利用して重要な海港コトルを占領，1183年にはハンガリー人と組んでさらに領土を拡大する。バルカン半島を通過した第3次十字軍の神聖ローマ皇帝フリードリヒ1世バルバロッサにビザンティン攻撃の同盟を申し込んだが，これは拒絶された。
