Served as president of Princeton Theological Seminary (36-59), chairman of the International Missionary Council (47-59), chairman of the Liaison Committee of the World Council of Churches (47-59), and chairman of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (54-59). One of the authors of the world church rule "Lasst die Kirche Kirche sein". Founder of the magazine "Theology Today" (44).
