Moritaka Kuki

A feudal lord in the early Edo period. Lord of Toba Domain in Shima Province (Mie Prefecture). His father was Yoshitaka and his mother was the daughter of Hara Munetada, born in Toba. He was originally named Tomotaka and then Mitsutaka. In 1597 (Keicho 2), he inherited the family headship, and in 1598 he became Nagato no Kami. In the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), despite his father Yoshitaka having sided with Ishida Mitsunari, he joined the Eastern Army, and was awarded over 55,000 koku after the battle. He led the Kuki Navy in the Siege of Osaka (1614 and 15), and transported stone materials from Kumano for the construction of Sunpu Castle and Edo Castle.

江戸初期の大名。志摩国(三重県)鳥羽藩主。父は嘉隆,母は原宗忠の娘,鳥羽生まれ。はじめ友隆,光隆。慶長2(1597)年,家督を相続,4年長門守。関ケ原の戦(1600)では,父嘉隆が石田三成に味方したにもかかわらず東軍に所属し,戦後5万5000石余を拝領する。大坂の陣(1614,15)では九鬼水軍を率いて参陣し,駿府城や江戸城の普請では熊野の石材などを運搬した。
