Born July 13, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. American actor. After attending college, he appeared in films for Columbia Pictures and Universal Studios. His first major acting role was in a small role in George Lucas' hit American Graffiti (1973), and he also appeared in Apocalypse Now (1979), directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who also produced that film. He played Han Solo in Lucas' Star Wars (1977), and continued to appear in the sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). He cemented his reputation with roles in the Lucas-produced, Steven Spielberg-directed series Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Witness (1985). In the 1990s, he continued to star in action films such as Patriot Games (1992), Clear and Present Danger (1994), and The Fugitive (1993). She starred in the fourth film in the Lucas and Spielberg series, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), and has since appeared in numerous films.

[Died] August 31, 1973, Palm Desert, California. One of America's leading film directors. His real name was Sean Aloysius O'Feeney (or O'Fearna). He joined Universal Studios in 1914 as a props man, and after working as an actor he became a director. He gained fame in 1924 with The Iron Horse, and went on to produce classic westerns such as Stagecoach (1939) and the cavalry story She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), which poetically depicted the adventures and lives of pioneers set in the harsh wilderness of the West. His Best Director films include The Informer (1935), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), How Green Was My Valley (1941, Best Picture), and The Quiet Man (1952). He also produced many other excellent westerns, including My Darling Clementine (1946) and The Searchers (1956).

[Died] June 26, 1939. Deauville, France. British novelist and poet. His real name was Ford Hermann Hueffer, and he was also known as FMHueffer. One of his early works is famous for The Good Soldier (1915). He founded the monthly English Review (08), which published early short stories by DH Lawrence. Hardy, H. James, HG Wells, and Galsworthy also contributed. In addition to Parade's End (24-28), a four-part war novel about World War I, he also published The Inheritors (01), which he collaborated with Conrad, as well as collections of poems, critical essays, travelogues, and memoirs.

[Died] December 26, 2006. Rancho Mirage, California. American politician. 38th President (in office 1974-77). Graduated from the University of Michigan. Became a lawyer, but entered politics in 1948 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan, and established his position within the Republican Party. In 1973, when Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigned due to bribery charges, he was appointed Vice President, and in 1974, when President Richard M. Nixon resigned due to the Watergate Scandal, he became the 38th President. During his term in office, he basically followed Nixon's policy line. He was also the first sitting president to visit Japan. He lost the 1976 presidential election to James E. Carter.

[Died] April 7, 1947. Born in Dearborn, Michigan. American businessman. Became an apprentice at a machine shop in Detroit in 1879, and in 1890 became an engineer for the Edison Electric Company. In 1903, he founded Ford Motor Company and became its president, beginning the manufacture of automobiles that he had designed himself. There, he implemented a highly streamlined management method known as the Ford System, succeeding in mass-producing automobiles, ushering in the automobile age in America and creating the world's largest automobile company. The Ford Foundation, established in 1936, has made significant contributions to the promotion of education.

He collaborated on several plays and masques with Decker and W. Lawley, and later worked on playwrighting alone. His representative works include tragedies such as The Broken Heart (c. 1629), 'Tis Pity She's a Whore (c. 32), and Perkin Warbeck (c. 33).

[Died] December 23, 1901, London. British sculptor. Studied sculpture in Antwerp and Munich, and was known as a portrait sculptor. Became a member of the Royal Academy in 1895. His major works include Sir Rowland Hill (1882), the Shelley Memorial (1992, Oxford University), and Queen Victoria (1999).

アメリカ合衆国の政治家。第 38代大統領 (在任 1974～77) 。ミシガン大学卒業。弁護士となったが 1948年ミシガン州から連邦下院議員に当選して政界に入り，共和党内での地歩を固めた。 1973年スピロ・T.アグニュー副大統領が収賄容疑で辞職すると副大統領に任命され，さらに 1974年ウォーターゲート事件によるリチャード・M.ニクソン大統領の辞任に伴い第 38代大統領に昇格した。在任中は基本的にニクソンの政策路線を受け継いだ。また現職大統領として初めて訪日した。 1976年の大統領選挙でジェームズ・E.カーターに敗れた。
