These are the ruins of a representative Inca city in the Cusco region in the southern mountain range of Peru. It is located on the saddle of a steep mountain at an altitude of over 2,500m, and its unique location with steep cliffs to the north, east, and west means that it was not a city in peacetime. It is said that it was actually used during the time of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire (early 16th century). However, despite its character as an evacuation zone, it contains many authentic buildings unique to the Inca, and the whole area is divided into temples, palaces, residential areas, cemeteries, etc., and has the appearance of a perfectly planned city with passageways and waterways.

ペルー南部山地，クスコ地方にあるインカ時代の代表的な都市遺跡。標高2500m余の急峻な山の鞍部にあり，北，東，西は急な崖という特殊な立地条件からみて，平時の都市ではない。実際にここが利用されたのは，スペイン人によるインカ帝国征服の時期(16世紀初め)であったといわれている。しかし避難区域的性格をもちながらもインカ特有の本格的建築が多数みられるうえ，全体は神殿群，宮殿，住居域，墓域などに分かれ，通路や水路もめぐらされた完全な計画都市の様相を呈している。
