A mineral that often forms rhombic columnar crystals similar to topaz. It can be distinguished from topaz because it has a lower specific gravity and shows almost no cleavage. In Japan, it is only found in a limited number of skarn deposits, such as the Obira Mine (closed) in Oita Prefecture and the Toroku Mine (closed) in Miyazaki Prefecture, often accompanied by axe stone. It is also found in veins cutting metamorphic rocks, in hydrothermal veins, and in sedimentary salt deposits. Its English name comes from Danbury, Connecticut, the US, where it was first found.
