The capital of Prahova County in southeastern Romania. It is located in the Tereagem River basin, upstream of the Iaromisa River, which flows through the eastern Romanian Plain. It has a population of 232,452 (2002). There are remains of Romanian dwellings from the 9th and 10th centuries, but it was recorded as a trading city from the end of the 16th century. In the second half of the 19th century, oil was extracted in the Prahova Valley behind the city, and an oil refinery was established, which led to rapid development. Industries such as petrochemicals, oil drilling machinery, agricultural machinery, building materials, furniture, leather, textiles, and food have developed in the city. It is the center of Romania's petrochemical industry. It is also a junction for transportation from the capital Bucharest to Moldova (Moldavia) and Transylvania. There is the 17th century Sfundo Apostoli Church. [Seinosuke Sasada] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
