Otsuji Iwama - Iwama Otsuji
Year of death: 7/9/1823 (8/14/1823)
Year of birth: 1756
A haiku poet of the mid-to-late Edo period. His real name was Kiyoo, and his pen name was Shoumado. He was the eldest son of Iwama Seikyou (haikai pen name Bakuro), the head priest of Senjyuin Temple in Shiroishi, Rikuzen (Miyagi Prefecture). He was the 10th head priest of Senjyuin Temple and Gon Daisozu. He learned haiku mainly from his father. He admired Yosa Buson from an early age, and later went to Edo, where he became acquainted with Natsume Shigemi, Takebe Sucho, and Suzuki Michihiko. He stayed in Hakodate twice, from Bunka 7 to 10 (1810-13) and from Bunsei 1 to 3 (1818-20), and formed the Otonoe Society, where he guided the local haiku world. Otsuji rejected technique and favored poems that were completely filled with emotion and "sincerity." His style is profound and gentle, as seen in the haiku he wrote when he entered his temporary residence in Hakodate, which he named "the handle of the axe." <References> Akabane Manabu, "Yoshikawa Gomei and Iwama Otsuji" (Meiji Shoin "Haiku Lectures" Volume 3)
