〘noun〙① A division of something into several categories or items. Items. ※Dajokan No. 42 - May 14, 1877 (Meiji 10), "However, cases such as misappropriation of major subject amounts may be reported to the Ministry of Finance." ② An academic subject. In many cases, it refers to the unit of study that constitutes a subject at a university or high school. ※Japan Education Policy (c. 1874-75)〈edited by Mori Arinori〉Outline of Education in the United States "The subjects shall be based on the system of ordinary middle schools." ③ An item in the Imperial Examination, an ancient Chinese examination for civil service.
