Irish novelist and playwright. Born in Dublin, he worked as a parish priest and wrote the successful tragedy "Bertram," but spent most of his life in poverty. His most famous work, "Melmoth the Wanderer" (1820), depicts the time- and space-traveling adventures of a man who has sold his soul to the devil, in a complex nesting structure. It won high praise from Balzac and others, and is considered the greatest Gothic romance. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
