A city in the Mostaganem Governorate in northwestern Algeria. It is located 80 km southeast of Oran, on the southern slope of the Ben Cheglan Mountains, a branch of the Tel Atlas (Atlástérien) Mountains, at an altitude of 600 m. Its name means "mother of soldiers" and was built in 1701 as a vanguard base for the Ottoman Empire, but was abandoned after Oran was captured from Spain in 1791. In 1832, the hero Abdel Kadir used it as a base for his anti-French resistance, but it was destroyed by the French army in 1835. Today's town was built on the ruins and serves as a distribution center for the region's wheat, tobacco, and olives, as well as the region's specialty high-quality wine. Population: 64,691 (1987 estimate). mascara |
