Also called turnip. A biennial herb that is botanically considered to be the same species as canola, Chinese cabbage, and yarrow in the Brassicaceae family. The roots are the main part of the vegetable, and it can be eaten boiled, but is often used as a pickled vegetable. In Japan, it has been called suzuna since ancient times and is counted as one of the seven herbs of spring. It is said to be native to the Mediterranean coast, southern Europe, and the Afghanistan region of Asia. It is said to have been cultivated in Europe before the Common Era, and was introduced to China from the west long ago, where it has been cultivated since before 2000.
