Saganoseki Peninsula

A wedge-shaped peninsula in eastern Oita Prefecture that separates Beppu Bay and Usuki Bay. It is part of Oita City. Together with the Sadamisaki Peninsula in Ehime Prefecture, it forms the gateway to the southwestern Seto Inland Sea and serves as a land bridge between Kyushu and Shikoku. It is a spur of the Momiki Mountains, 300-400 meters above sea level, made mainly of Sanbagawa schist with serpentine rocks. Farming and fishing villages are dotted along the coast, producing rice, wheat, mandarin oranges, and other crops. The JR Nippon Main Line runs through the neck of the peninsula, and national highways 197 and 217 run along the coast. Near the tip is the central district of Seki, with a fishing port and a smelter. A ferry runs between the port of Saganoseki and the port of Misaki (Ehime Prefecture).

大分県東部、別府湾(べっぷわん)と臼杵湾(うすきわん)を分けるくさび形の半島。大分市域にあたる。愛媛県佐田岬半島(さだみさきはんとう)とともに瀬戸内海南西部の門戸をつくり、九州―四国間の陸橋をなしている。おもに、蛇紋(じゃもん)岩を伴う三波川(さんばがわ)結晶片岩からなる、標高300～400メートルの樅木(もみき)山地の地塁で、主農副漁の集落が沿岸に点在し、米麦、ミカンなどをつくる。頸部(けいぶ)をJR日豊(にっぽう)本線が走り、国道197号と217号が海岸を巡る。先端に近く、漁港と製錬所のある中心地区関がある。佐賀関港と三崎港（愛媛県）との間にフェリーボートが通っている。
