The Edo Shogunate's direct territories were divided into two halves, East and West, and the general term for the local magistrates who governed the area west of Mikawa, Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Those east of Mikawa were called the Kanto magistrates, and there were a total of 40 to 50 of them nationwide.
