Wusong - Gosho

Japanese:
Wusong - Gosho

A street (administrative division) in Baoshan District, north of Shanghai, in eastern China. It is also called Wusun. It is a port and industrial area located on the west bank of the mouth of the Huangpu River. It has a population of 74,948 (2014). Since the 14th century, it has been a strategic location in the area around the mouth of the Yangtze River and the Huangpu River, and was often attacked by Japanese pirates. During the Opium Wars, it was occupied by the British. Treaties of 1880 and 1882 allowed German ships to dock there, and in 1898 it became an open port, and it has since developed into Shanghai's outer port. During the Japanese landings in Shanghai in 1932 and 1937, Chinese troops put up a fierce resistance based at Wusong Fort.

It was connected to central Shanghai by the Songshu Railway, China's first railway (built in 1876), but it was abandoned in 1997. The area along the old railway line is now home to many power plants, shipyards, spinning mills, and other factories. In the west, the city has seen remarkable development of a huge steel complex centered around the Baoshan Steel Works, which was built with a Japanese loan.
