Shiga [village] - Shiga

Japanese: 四賀[村] - しが

A village in Higashichikuma County, central Nagano Prefecture. Population 6,374 (1995). A mountain village located in the Chikuma Mountains, about 80% of the total area is made up of forests and wilderness. Rice fields are cultivated along the Aida River and Hofukuji River, tributaries of the Sai River that flows west through the center of the village, and the mountain slopes are also cultivated. Aida, the central settlement, flourished as a post station on the Hokkoku Nishiwaki Highway (Zenkoji Road) during the Edo period, and was a key transportation hub until the opening of the Shinonoi Line in 1902. The main industry is agriculture, and in recent years poultry, pig farming, and dairy farming have grown in place of rice cultivation and sericulture.

長野県中部，東筑摩郡の村。人口6374(1995)。筑摩山地に位置する山村で，総面積の約80％を山林･原野が占める。中央を西流する犀（さい）川支流の会田川と保福寺川沿いに水田が開けるほか，山間傾斜地も耕地化されている。中心集落の会田は江戸時代，北国西脇往還(善光寺道)の宿駅として栄え，1902年の篠ノ井線開通までは交通の要地であった。主産業は農業で，近年稲作，養蚕に代わって，養鶏，養豚，酪農が伸びている。
