Nakayama Naruchika

A nobleman in the late Edo period. He was active in the so-called Imperial title issue. He was promoted to the rank of Second Rank Gon Dainagon, and in 1788 (Tenmei 8), he was appointed as a Gisou (councillor) in the position of close aide to the emperor. By chance, Emperor Kokaku at the time wanted to bestow the Imperial title of Retired Emperor on his birth father, Prince Kan'in no Miya Norihito, and had Yoshichika research the precedents in which the Emperor's father had been given the Imperial title even though he had not ascended to the throne. As a result, Yoshichika expressed his support for the Imperial title being bestowed on Prince Norihito, and in August 1789 (Kansei 1), the Emperor notified the shogunate of this and asked for its consent. However, he met with strong opposition from the senior councilor Matsudaira Sadanobu and others, and in November 1792, the Imperial title was cancelled. The following year, Yoshichika was summoned to Edo along with the samurai priest Masamachi Kinakira and gave an explanation for the incident, but the shogunate sentenced Yoshichika to 100 days of confinement and Kinakira to 50 days of seclusion.

江戸後期の公卿(くぎょう)。いわゆる尊号一件で活躍した。正(しょう)二位権大納言(ごんだいなごん)に累進、1788年（天明8）には天皇側近職の議奏に任じた。たまたま時の光格(こうかく)天皇が、生父の閑院宮典仁(すけひと)親王に太上(だいじょう)天皇の尊号を贈ろうとし、天皇の父で皇位につかずとも尊号宣下のあった先例故事を、愛親に調査せしめた。その結果、愛親は典仁親王への尊号宣下に賛意を示したので、89年（寛政1）8月、天皇はこれを幕府に通知し同意を求めた。しかし老中松平定信(さだのぶ)らの強硬な反対にあい、92年11月尊号宣下は中止となった。翌年愛親は、武家伝奏正親町公明(おおぎまちきんあきら)とともに江戸に喚問され、一件についての釈明を行ったが、幕府は愛親に閉門100日、公明に逼塞(ひっそく)50日を命じた。
