1443‐1513 A pope famous for his diplomacy and patronage of the arts and sciences. Reigned 1503-13. Formerly named Giuliano della Rovere. Born in Albissola, an eastern suburb of Savona, Italy, he was granted many bishoprics by his uncle, Pope Sixtus IV, and promoted to cardinal in 1471. He had a great influence on the accession and policies of Pope Innocent VIII (reigned 1484-92), but fled to France during the reign of the next pope, Alexander VI (1492-1503).
