Julius II
1443‐1513
A pope famous for his diplomacy and patronage of the arts and sciences. Reigned 1503-13. Formerly named Giuliano della Rovere. Born in Albissola, an eastern suburb of Savona, Italy, he was granted many bishoprics by his uncle, Pope Sixtus IV, and promoted to cardinal in 1471. He had a great influence on the accession and policies of Pope Innocent VIII (reigned 1484-92), but fled to France during the reign of the next pope, Alexander VI (1492-1503).

外交および学芸保護で名を成した教皇。在位1503‐13年。前名ジュリアノ・デラ・ロベレGiuliano della Rovere。イタリアのサボナ東郊のアルビッソラに生まれ,伯父の教皇シクストゥス4世から多くの司教領を与えられ,1471年枢機卿に昇進。教皇インノケンティウス8世(在位1484‐92)の即位と政策に大きな影響を及ぼしたが,次のアレクサンデル6世の在位中(1492‐1503)はフランスに亡命。
