Mashiko (Monkey) - Mashiko

Japanese: マシコ(猿子) - マシコ

A general term for several genera of birds in the family Fringillidae in the order Passeriformes. Originally it was another name for the Japanese macaque. Birds called Mashiko include the genera Leucosticte ( Leucosticte), Uragus (Uragus (illustration)), Carpodacus (Carpodacus), Chaunoproctus ( Chaunoproctus), and Pinicola (Pinicola) , all of which have a unique red plumage. The name Mashiko comes from the fact that this resembles the facial color of the Japanese macaque, but it does not refer to a specific taxonomic group.

スズメ目アトリ科の数属の鳥の総称。元来はニホンザルの異称であった。マシコと呼ばれる鳥にはハギマシコLeucosticte，ベニマシコUragus（イラスト），マシコCarpodacus，オガサワラマシコChaunoproctus，ギンザンマシコPinicolaなどの属のものがあり，いずれも独特の赤色の羽色をもっている。これがニホンザルの顔の色に似ているところからマシコの名がでているが，特定の分類群を指すものではない。
