Born: March 6, 1923 in Niigata, Joetsu [Died] December 4, 2009. Sendai, Miyagi. Bacteriologist, former president of Tohoku University. Graduated from Tohoku University School of Medicine in 1946, and became an associate professor in 1951. In 1953, he discovered the Sendai virus, a new virus with red blood cell agglutination ability that is antigenically different from influenza virus. In 1954, he studied at the University of Michigan Virus Research Institute in the United States. In 1960, he became a professor at Tohoku University School of Medicine. He continued to study the structure of the Sendai virus, and was the first in the world to elucidate the mechanism by which the Sendai virus infects and multiplies in cells. He also discovered that this mechanism is common to many viruses, which led to the elucidation of the true nature of hepatitis B and the development of a vaccine, contributing to the drastic reduction of hepatitis B, which was said to be a national disease of the 21st century, and was highly regarded both in Japan and abroad as a leading figure in the field of virology. He was dean of Tohoku University School of Medicine in 1975, and served as president from 1983 to 1989. He received the Noguchi Hideyo Memorial Prize for Medicine in 1980, the Japan Academy Prize in 1987, and the Order of the Sacred Treasure, First Class, in 1996.
