Mashike Mountains - Mashikesanchi

A mountain range in western Hokkaido. Also known as the Kabato Mountains. It borders the Ishikari Plain to the east and south, faces the Sea of ​​Japan to the west, and is bordered by the Rumoi River valley to the north by the Teshio Mountains. The eastern half is mostly Neogene hilly mountain range, and in the northwest, these are the base for the Shokanbetsu volcano group, which includes dissecting volcanoes over 1000 meters high, such as Shokanbetsu-dake (1491 meters), Minamishokan-dake, Gunbetsu-dake, Hamamasu-dake, and Ofuyu-san. All of the volcanoes have been inactive for a long time, and the mountains have been eroded to the point where they no longer retain their original shape. The Uryu Numa Marsh is located on the lava plateau east of Minamishokan-dake, and the Japan Coast is lined with sea cliffs about 100 meters high, including Cape Ofuyu. The area including the volcano group, Uryu Swamp, and Ofuyudo Beach is designated as Shokanbetsu-Teuri-Yagishiri Quasi-National Park.

北海道西部の山地。別名樺戸山地(かばとさんち)。東と南は石狩平野に接し、西は日本海に臨み、北は留萌(るもい)川河谷によって天塩(てしお)山地と境される。東半部は大部分新第三紀の丘陵性山地で、北西部にはこれらを基盤として暑寒別(しょかんべつ)岳（1491メートル）、南暑寒岳、群別(ぐんべつ)岳、浜益(はまます)岳、雄冬(おふゆ)山など1000メートルを超える開析火山があり、暑寒別火山群を形成している。火山群はいずれも活動停止後長い期間を経て、山体は原形をとどめぬほど侵食されている。南暑寒岳の東の溶岩台地には雨竜沼湿原(うりゅうぬましつげん)があり、日本海岸は高さ100メートル内外の海食崖(がい)が続き、雄冬岬などがある。火山群と雨竜沼、雄冬海岸などを含む地域は、暑寒別天売焼尻(てうりやぎしり)国定公園に指定されている。
