Machaon (English spelling)

Machaon (English spelling)

During the Trojan War, Philoctetes led seven warships to the enemy's territory, but on the way he was bitten on the foot by a poisonous snake on the island of Tenedos, and the wound became infected and emitted a terrible stench, so he was left alone on the island of Lemnos. However, ten years later, the Greek army heard from the enemy prophet Helenus, who had been captured, that Troy was destined to be lost only by the bow of Heracles, so they sent Odysseus and Diomedes (or Neoptolemus, the surviving son of Achilles) to the island of Lemnos. When Philoctetes arrived at Troy accompanied by the two, he was first healed by the famous physician Machaon, and then shot dead the enemy general Paris, who had started the war. The story was dramatized by the three great tragic poets, Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, but only Sophocles' Philoctetes (performed in 409 BC) survives.
