…It is a commonly used theatrical term, especially in tragedies, to refer to the end of a dramatic sequence of events or the fate of the protagonist reaching a decisive and catastrophic conclusion. In a comedy, the conflict is resolved in a happy finale, and the two terms form a pair, so to speak. Both have been discussed in connection with the climax as a matter of dramatic technique.
