A financial instruments exchange (→ Stock Exchange) as defined by the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. It is the core of the five financial instruments exchanges established nationwide. It opened as the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1878 and was reorganized as the Japan Securities Exchange in 1943. It was closed by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (GHQ) in 1947. In 1949, the Tokyo Stock Exchange was established as a member organization under the Securities and Exchange Act. In 1961, the Second Section was added. It creates and publishes the Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) and simple average stock prices. In March 2000, it merged with the Hiroshima Securities Exchange and the Niigata Securities Exchange. Following the revision of the Securities and Exchange Act in 2000, it transitioned to a joint-stock company in November 2001. In 2007, the holding company Tokyo Stock Exchange Group was established. In 2013, the Tokyo Stock Exchange Group and the Osaka Securities Exchange merged to form the holding company Japan Exchange Group, which was then incorporated under the umbrella of the Tokyo Stock Exchange Group.
