...the kingdom that ruled the southern part of the Italian peninsula from the late 13th century to the early 19th century. Between the late 11th and 12th centuries, the southern part of the Italian peninsula and Sicily were conquered and united by the Normans (1140). The Kingdom of Sicily thus formed was passed on to the House of Hohenstaufen (1194-1266) and the House of Anjou (1266-1435). However, in 1282, the Sicilian Vespers incident led to Sicily falling into the hands of Aragon.
