A city in the eastern part of North Hamgyong Province, North Korea. It is located at the southern end of the Yangtze River Plain, surrounded by hills on three sides, and opens up to the Yangtze River Plain in the northeast. Before liberation in 1945, it was the seat of the North Hamgyong Provincial Office and the Ranam 19th Division, but after liberation, the provincial office was moved to Chongjin City. In the suburbs are state-run fruit farms and local industrial enterprises for leather, pharmaceuticals, and food.
