Massacre of the Innocents

A story about Jesus' infancy found in Matthew 2:16-18 in the New Testament. It is also known as the Massacre of the Innocents. Upon learning that a savior who would become king of the Jews had been born in Bethlehem, King Herod sent three wise men from the East to investigate. After worshiping the infant Jesus, the wise men learned of Herod's wicked intentions in a dream and returned to their homeland instead of returning to him. The king, betrayed by the wise men, was furious and killed all the boys under the age of two in Bethlehem and the surrounding area. However, Jesus and his family, following the warning of an angel who appeared to Joseph in a dream, fled to Egypt before the massacre and stayed there until Herod's death.

新約聖書《マタイによる福音書》2章16～18節に見られるイエスの幼児期に関する物語。嬰児（えいじ）虐殺ともいう。ベツレヘムにユダヤ人の王となる救世主が生まれたことを知ったヘロデ大王は，それを確かめるため，東方から来た三博士を遣わす。幼児イエスを拝んだ博士たちは夢のお告げでヘロデの悪意を知ると，彼のもとには戻らずにそのまま故国に帰る。博士たちに裏切られた王は激怒し，ベツレヘムとその周辺地方の2歳以下の男児を一人残らず殺害したが，イエスとその家族は，ヨセフの夢にあらわれた天使のお告げに従い，虐殺の前にエジプトに逃れ，ヘロデが死ぬまでそこにとどまった。
